Dimitrov, Berdych Reach Australian Open’s Fourth RoundRob Gloster
Seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych and 10th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov became the first men to advance to the fourth round at the Australian Open tennis tournament.
While Berdych won in straight sets today against Viktor Troicki of Serbia, Dimitrov needed five sets to defeat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus.
Berdych, from the Czech Republic, won 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 and next will face the winner of the all-Australian match between Bernard Tomic and Sam Groth.
Dimitrov, a Bulgarian who made the quarterfinals last year, won 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and moved on to play either sixth-seeded Briton Andy Murray or Portugal’s Joao Sousa.
Second-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland plays later this afternoon, and No. 3 Rafael Nadal of Spain has a match tonight.
Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard, the seventh-seeded woman at the season’s first Grand Slam tournament, reached the fourth round with a 7-5, 6-0 victory against Caroline Garcia of France. Bouchard was a semifinalist last year in Melbourne.
