South African Politician Malema Blames ANC for Power Crisis

Updated on

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress has itself to blame for an electricity crisis that’s hurting the economy, said Julius Malema, leader of the nation’s second-biggest opposition party.

Malema, 33, dismissed comments made on Jan. 10 by President Jacob Zuma, who sought to deflect criticism of power shortages on the policies of the white minority government that ruled South Africa until 1994. Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., the state-owned utility that generates 95 percent of the nation’s power, began rolling blackouts for the first time in six years in November as it struggles to meet demand.
