Tropical Storm Chedza Leaves 49 People Dead in Madagascar

A tropical storm that swept across the Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar earlier this week left at least 49 people dead, the National Office for Disaster Management said.

Tropical Storm Chedza left more than than 120,000 “disaster victims” and forced 42,000 to flee their homes, the Antananarivo-based agency said by e-mail Wednesday. The weather system made landfall on Jan. 16 and was preceded by about a week of heavy rains.
