Steyer Climate Group Takes to Air for State of the Union

He says nothing about his deliberations to seek a California Senate seat.

Tom Steyer is going up with a TV ad, but not for a Senate campaign, and not in California.

The billionaire environmentalist's group, NextGen Climate, said Tuesday that it will run a 30-second TV ad in the Washington market during coverage of President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech. The ad focuses on bygone anti-scientific notions like the earth being flat and cigarettes not being harmful to health.

“Now they tell us climate change is a hoax,” a narrator says in the ad over footage of melting glaciers and Republican mega-donor David Koch. “Some powerful people want to hold us back, but the truth is undeniable.”

In a news release about the ad, Steyer said nothing about his deliberations about seeking retiring Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer's seat. In a question-and-answer session on Reddit on Thursday, he said he would decide “pretty soon.” He is “is telling potential supporters he would commit to serving only one term if he can’t reach goals dealing with the environment, economy and education within six years,” the Sacramento Bee reported on Sunday, citing Steyer associates.

Steyer would face state Attorney General Kamala Harris in a likely lengthy and expensive race for a seat that has not been open since 1992.
