China Pushes Ideological Training at Universities, Xinhua Says

China ordered its universities to boost “ideological work” by championing Marxism, core socialist values and traditional culture, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.

Ideological and political work should follow the Communist Party’s leadership, and “socialism with Chinese characteristics” should underpin teaching methods, Xinhua reported, citing a guideline issued by the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council.

The guideline also calls for close management of schools’ ideological and publicity teams, further strengthening of cyber security and establishing regulations to guide classroom discipline.

Systems to approve and supervise students’ associations should be established, and religious studies and anti-cult awareness should be developed, Xinhua cited the guideline as saying.
