Cuomo Plans Trade Mission to Cuba

The New York governor is expected to announce the trip during his Wednesday State of the State address.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will go on a trade visit to Cuba, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday. Cuomo is expected to announce the trip during his State of the State address on Wednesday.

This comes just days after the Obama administration published new rules loosening trade and travel restrictions between the U.S. and Cuba.

“As part of the Global NY initiative, Governor Cuomo plans to lead a trade mission to Cuba,” Melissa DeRosa, a spokeswoman for the governor, said in an e-mail to Bloomberg News. “This is one of several such trips promoting New York that he plans to take in the coming term.”

Cuomo is one of the first politicians to signal plans for such a trip since the Obama administration moved to normalize relations with Cuba last month. U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker also plans to make a trade mission.
