Maithripala Sirisena called for a transformation of Sri Lanka and said he will serve only one term in office as he was sworn in as the nation’s president after his unexpected defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa who had ruled for a decade.
“I will lead a social transformation of Sri Lanka,” Sirisena, 63, said yesterday in his inaugural speech in central Colombo. “I am here only to implement a program toward that.” Supporters lit firecrackers nearby in celebration.
