Skydivers Jump to Safety as Light Plane Crashes Into N.Z. Lake

All 13 people on board a light aircraft that crashed into Lake Taupo on New Zealand’s North Island today parachuted to safety, police said.

The skydiving plane from Skydive Taupo encountered an emergency situation during its climb to altitude this afternoon local time, police said in an e-mailed statement. Six crew were due to tandem skydive with six passengers and they evacuated the aircraft in tandem, the statement said. The pilot was also able to parachute out before the plane hit the water.

All 13 landed safely on the shore and were checked over by ambulance staff. Police said the Transport Accident Investigation Commission has opened an inquiry.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
