Indian Police Arrest Owner of Pro-Islamic State Twitter AccountAnurag Kotoky
Indian police arrested a man who admitted to running a Twitter account in support of militant group Islamic State.
Police identified the man as Mehdi Mehboob Biswas, Lalrokhuma Pachuau, the director general of police in Karnataka state, said in a televised press conference. Biswas is an engineer based in Bengaluru, formerly Bangalore.
The detained man operated Twitter handle @ShamiWitness which is no longer operational, Pachuau said. Police haven’t found any direct link between Biswas and the militants, he said.
U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 reported Dec. 11 that it tracked down the identity of the man behind the handle, though it didn’t name him.
“We do not comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons,” Twitter India said in an e-mailed statement. “We do not proactively monitor content on the platform. We review all reported accounts against our rules, which prohibit direct, specific threats of violence against others.”
