Mauritius will hold parliamentary elections tomorrow after a campaign dominated by politicians’ promises to revive growth and create jobs.

An alliance of the ruling Labour Party and Mouvement Militant Mauricien is expected to beat a coalition of the Mouvement Socialiste Militant and Parti Mauricien Social Democrate. A Labour-MMM victory would make MMM leader Paul Berenger, 69, the prime minister, replacing Navinchandra Ramgoolam, 67, who would become president. If elected, their alliance plans to amend the constitution to increase the president’s scope of duties from what are now largely ceremonial, without eroding the powers of the prime minister.
