Emerging Stocks Decline as Energy Shares Slump; Ruble Weakens

Updated on

Emerging-market stocks extended this month’s decline as a slump in oil prices dragged energy shares to a five-year low. The ruble slid to a record.

China’s Cnooc Ltd. and South Africa’s Sasol Ltd. sank at least 5.5 percent. Russia’s currency depreciated 1.6 percent. Hungary’s BUX Index decreased 0.8 percent led by oil company Mol Nyrt. Chinese bank shares drove its stock market past Japan as the world’s second-largest for the first time in three years. Most Brazilian stocks rose as a weaker real boosted exporters including mining company Vale SA.
