With the smoke of burned businesses in the air, Curtis Barks’ employees shoveled shards of glass into a trash bin. They covered the broken windows of his auto repair business with plywood.

“With as much police force and all the hype, there’s no reason this should’ve happened,” said Barks, 36, who owns Complete Auto Body & Repair just across the city line from Ferguson, Missouri.
