Bacon’s Papal Portrait Fetches $44.9 Million at Christie’s

A 1960 painting by Francis Bacon of a papal figure on a red chair set against a deep red background sold for $44.9 million at Christie’s in New York.

“Seated Figure” had been valued at $40 million to $60 million.

The artist’s triptych “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” sold to Elaine Wynn in New York last November at Christie’s for $142.4 million and holds the world auction record.

Christie’s postwar and contemporary art sale is continuing.
