‘Flag’ Painting by Jasper Johns Sells for $36 Million in N.Y.

A small American flag painting by Jasper Johns made from encaustic and silk from 1983, sold for $36 million at Sotheby’s in New York, setting an auction record for the artist.

“Flag,” which had been in the same collection since 1983, was estimated at $15 million to $20 million. Prices include commissions; estimates don’t.

Sotheby’s postwar and contemporary art sale is continuing.
