Chocolate Makers Can Do More for Women in Africa, Oxfam Says

Chocolate makers need to do more to meet pledges to improve gender equality in their cocoa-supply chain in Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world’s biggest growers, according to Oxfam International.

Nestle SA, Mondelez International Inc. and Mars Inc. promised to come up with concrete plans to boost equality after Oxfam released a study last year detailing shortcomings involving women, the U.K.-based charity said in an e-mailed statement dated Oct. 31. While the companies, which together buy about 30 percent of the world’s cocoa, have taken the first steps, “none has yet enacted adequate changes,” it said.
