Shell Seeks to Drill in Arctic in 2015, Defying Green Activists

Royal Dutch Shell Plc is seeking to drill for oil in Arctic seas off Alaska next year in defiance of green campaigners who argue harsh conditions make it unsafe.

Europe’s biggest oil company spent $6 billion looking for oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas for eight years until the grounding of a rig in rough seas in 2012, along with damage to a spill-containment system, halted operations for repairs. The Hague, Netherlands-based company has been sued by activists who say the explorer’s missteps are evidence that it’s ill-prepared.
