The launch of Apple Pay had already turned into a mess for CurrentC, a rival payment network backed by Wal-Mart Stores and other retailers—and that was before hackers gained access to the e-mail addresses of CurrentC’s pilot users.

MCX, the company building the payment system, says that the e-mails were accessed when its e-mail provider was hacked but declined to name the outside company. In a call with reporters Wednesday afternoon, MCX Chief Executive Dekkers Davidson said the system had been attacked multiple times over the last seven or eight days. “None of this comes as a surprise,” he said. “We’re challenging the status quo.”
