Toronto Mayor Vows to Ease Gridlock as Ford Reign Ends

Updated on

John Tory is promising to ease traffic and forge political consensus after he was elected mayor of Canada’s biggest city, bringing an end to four years of controversy under a scandal-plagued Rob Ford.

Tory, a former corporate executive, Conservative politician and talk-show host, defeated the populist platform espoused by Doug Ford by about six percentage points. Tory’s focus on fixing the city’s growing pains of road construction, street congestion and an over-burdened public transit system resonated in a city in the midst of a building boom, as more voters came out last night than the last five elections.
