Hungary to Press Charges Against NGO as Democracy Row Escalates

Hungary’s audit office will press charges against a non-government organization in charge of distributing Norwegian grants, escalating a diplomatic row.

The office found evidence of fraud in the way Budapest-based Okotars Alapitvany distributed the grants, Janos Lazar, Minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office, told reporters in the Hungarian capital today. Okotars denied wrongdoing and said in an e-mailed statement that it was the victim of a “defamation campaign” mounted by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government.
