Matt Damon’s to Boost Safe Water Access in East Africa, a U.S. non-profit group co-founded by actor Matt Damon, will provide 178 million shillings ($2 million) in loans over the next year to boost access to safe water and sanitation in Kenya and Uganda.

“By providing families with micro-sized loans to purchase their own water connection or toilet, is empowering families to take charge of their own futures,” Richard Thorsten, director of international programs, said in an e-mailed statement today.

The organization is partnering with lenders to attract additional funding for the program, he said. Equity Bank Ltd., Kenya Women Finance Trust, SMEP DTM Ltd. of Kenya and Post Bank Uganda are part of the project, he said.
