St. Louis on Edge as Protests Over Police Shootings Spread

Updated on

Clashes over the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager that were confined to a hardscrabble stretch of suburban Ferguson are enveloping the St. Louis area, much of which had safely watched events unfold on the television screen.

Protests over that killing and another last week have erupted at a performance of the 134-year-old symphony, at Busch Stadium where the Cardinals compete for the National League pennant and during four days of marches that culminated today with the arrests of activists, including Cornel West. As a grand jury considers charges against the white Ferguson officer who killed Michael Brown in August, this weekend saw demonstrations from the iconic Gateway Arch to the south side and back to Ferguson, north of the Missouri city.
