Tesla Teases Its Next Big D

What’s a Tesla D? That’s what the car world is wondering after a cryptic tweet by Elon Musk this morning.

The electric-car company has a couple of much-anticipated vehicles in the works, but neither is branded “D.” The pending Tesla SUV is called the “X,” and the company is working on a Model 3 (or “Model III), a smaller car that will sell for about $35,000.

Bloomberg Intelligence Analyst Kevin Tynan suggested the “D” could stand for all-wheel-drive version of the company’s Tesla S sedan, which currently is available only with rear-wheel drive. Or it could be a reference to the auto industry’s “D segment,” which embraces midsize cars that are a bit smaller than the S.

The Internet had plenty of similar theories to poke at Musk. Investors, however, were emboldened. Tesla shares spiked almost 5 percent on the tweet.
