Brazil Auction Gets 3 Gigawatts Additional Capacity After Delay

Developers proposing about three gigawatts of capacity applied to participate in an energy auction in Brazil after the event was postponed for a second time.

The so-called A-5 auction will take place Nov. 28. It was initially set for Sept. 12 and then pushed out until Sept. 30 to give developers additional time to submit proposals.

Brazil’s energy regulator Empresa de Pesquisa Energetica received 74 new applications for the event, according to an e-mailed statement today. Developers have submitted proposals for a total of 53,869 megawatts of capacity.

About one gigawatt of the newly proposed capacity came from applications for 55 wind farms. Seven biomass thermal projects applied for the auction, along with nine hydropower facilities and three natural gas thermal projects.
