Serena Williams Advances to U.S. Open Final Against Wozniacki

Five-time champion Serena Williams advanced to the U.S. Open women’s final with a straight-set win today against Ekaterina Makarova and will face Caroline Wozniacki in the Sept. 7 championship match.

The top-seeded Williams, 32, a two-time defending champion from the U.S., won 6-1, 6-3 against the 17th-seeded Russian at the National Tennis Center in New York.

She will be seeking to capture her 18th Grand Slam singles title, tying Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova for fourth on the women’s career list.

Wozniacki earlier reached her second U.S. Open final when Peng Shuai retired in the second set with cramps. Wozniacki, the 10th seed from Denmark and a former world No. 1, was leading 7-6 (7-1), 4-3 when Peng, an unseeded player from China, could not continue and was taken off the court in a wheelchair.
