No. 2 Seed Halep Upset at U.S. Open as Venus Williams Also Loses

Women’s second seed Simona Halep and former two-time champion Venus Williams lost in the third round today at the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

Halep, 22, from Romania, lost 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 to Croatian qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who advanced to the fourth round of the season’s final Grand Slam tournament for the first time in 10 tries.

Williams, 34, an American who won the title in 2000 and 2001 and was the 19th seed this year, lost 6-0, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5) to 13th-seeded Sara Errani of Italy.
