Bank of America Merrill Names Manaka as Japan M&A Head

Bank of America Corp.’s Merrill Lynch appointed Akihiko Manaka to lead its mergers and acquisitions advisory business in Japan.

Manaka, 39, became the head of M&A at Merrill Lynch Japan Securities Co. on July 7, Tsukasa Noda, a Tokyo-based spokesman, said by phone. He joined Merrill Lynch as a mergers advisory banker in 2006.

Manaka helped advise Daikin Industries Ltd. to acquire Goodman Global Group Inc. in 2012, and Nippon Steel Corp. to combine with Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd., Noda said. He previously worked at Morgan Stanley from 2000 after graduating from the University of Tokyo, according to Noda.

“Japanese companies are using domestic and international M&A as a driver for further growth, in an environment where the declining birthrate and other issues make organic growth increasingly difficult to achieve,” Manaka said in a statement to Bloomberg News.

Bank of America was ranked fifth among M&A advisers in Japan last year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank isn’t in the top 10 this year.
