Somali government soldiers backed by African Union forces foiled an attack by al-Qaeda-linked militants on the presidential palace in the capital, Mogadishu.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud and Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed are safe and the area is secure, the presidency said in a statement on its Twitter account. At least nine attackers were killed in the assault, Agence France-Presse reported, citing Abdi Ahmed, a security official.
