Five-Time Champion Serena Williams Out of Wimbledon

Serena Williams’s quest for a sixth Wimbledon title ended at the hands of French No. 24 Alize Cornet, who beat the top ranked American for a second time this year.

Cornet won 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to give Williams her earliest exit from Wimbledon since 2005. Her sister Venus Williams was eliminated from the grass-court tournament yesterday.

The players had to wait almost five hours to resume their match, which was interrupted by rain after only 17 minutes.

Earlier today men’s second seed Rafael Nadal and seven-time winner Roger Federer advanced to the fourth round.
