NFL Shuns Roman Numerals for Super Bowl 50 Logo in San Francisco

The Super Bowl will abandon its Roman tradition for one year.

The logo for the 2016 National Football League championship game will feature the words Super Bowl and the number 50, in place of a Roman numeral “L.”

The league has used Roman numerals to define its title game since Super Bowl V between the Baltimore Colts and Dallas Cowboys in 1971.

Roman numerals will return for the 2017 championship game at Reliant Stadium in Houston, the league said.

Super Bowl 50 is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2016, at San Francisco’s new Levi’s Stadium, which will host the 49ers for the first time this coming season.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
