Rafael Nadal Beats Thiem to Extend French Open Record to 61-1

Defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Austria’s Dominic Thiem in straight sets to extend his French Open win-loss record to 61-1.

Nadal of Spain beat Thiem 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 on the main Court Philippe Chatrier at Roland Garros in Paris. Thiem, at 20 the youngest man left in the men’s singles draw, had been playing in his first French Open.

The 27-year-old Spaniard is trying to become the first man in tennis history to win the French Open five times in a row. His only defeat on the Parisian clay dates back to 2009.
