Venus Williams Upset by Schmiedlova at French Open TennisChristopher Elser
Seven-time tennis Grand Slam champion Venus Williams was upset by Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia in the second round of the French Open.
The 19-year-old unseeded Schmiedlova beat Williams, 33, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in Paris. Serving for the match, Schmiedlova won with a cross-court backhand after a rally.
“This is the biggest thing in my life,” she said in an interview afterward, as she wiped away tears. “She’s a great player, and I still cannot believe that I won.”
Williams, whose best result at Roland Garros came in 2002 when she lost to her sister Serena in the final, had beaten Schmiedlova in their only other meeting, on hard courts in Miami earlier this year.
The American was on course to meet Serena in the next round if both women won their second-round matches. Now Schmiedlova may now face Serena.
