German Minister Cites NATO Pressure in Defense of Rally Outburst

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier cited pressure from NATO allies to take a harder line on Russia after an angry outburst this week at protesters who accused him of warmongering over Ukraine.

In a video viewed more than 1.5 million times since May 20, Steinmeier is seen shouting down demonstrators at a European election rally on Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. Protesters are heard shouting “warmonger,” while one holds a sign that reads “stop the Nazis in Ukraine,” a reference to right-wing nationalist groups in the former Soviet republic.
