West Bromwich Albion Coach Mel Leaves After 3 Wins in 17 Games

West Bromwich Albion coach Pepe Mel is leaving four months into an 18-month contract after the English soccer club finished the season one place above the Premier League relegation zone.

Mel, a 51-year-old Spaniard, and the club parted by mutual consent, according to a team statement. He oversaw three wins, six draws and eight losses in 17 league games.

West Bromwich Albion finished 17th of 20 teams, three points ahead of relegated Norwich City.

“Although we have managed to achieve a fifth successive season of Premier League football, it has been a very disappointing campaign,” sports director Richard Garlick said in the statement.

Mel led Real Betis to seventh place in La Liga last year, although he was fired in December after the Seville, Spain-based club went eight matches without a win.
