Liberian Capital Loses 80% of Piped Water, New Democrat Says

Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, loses about 80 percent of the water pumped to residents as a result of illegal connections and broken infrastructure, the New Democrat newspaper reported, citing the Liberia Water and Sewer Corp.

The LWSC pumps about 6 million gallons of water daily and supply cuts, some lasting several day, are common, Managing Director Charles Allen was quoted as telling lawmakers.

The state-owned company requires $500,000 for emergency repairs to the system, the Monrovia-based newspaper reported.
