Devils Coach DeBoer Will Return After Missing NHL Playoffs TwiceMichael Sillup
New Jersey Devils coach Peter DeBoer, who was unable to get the team into the playoffs for the past two years, will return next season, general manager Lou Lamoriello said.
DeBoer, 45, took over the team before the 2011-12 season and led the Devils to the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings. They haven’t made the playoffs since.
Lamoriello, speaking after the first period of yesterday’s season-ending game against the Boston Bruins, said he confirmed DeBoer’s return to end speculation about the coach’s fate with the team, the Devils said on their website. He would not comment on whether the team was working on contract extension.
“Pete DeBoer is under contract for next year, has been under contract for next year, and will be coaching next year,” Lamoriello said. “That’s all I have to say. I don’t want to get into any other discussions.”
DeBoer has compiled a 101-75-34 record with the Devils.
