Clegg and Farage May Both Win Debate on U.K. in Europe

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg faces U.K. Independence Party leader Nigel Farage tonight in the first of two debates on Britain’s membership of the European Union. It’s a clash from which they may both emerge winners.

For Farage, the debates offer prime-time exposure and evidence that UKIP, which has never won a seat in Parliament and seeks to pull Britain out of the EU, is being taken seriously. For Clegg, whose Liberal Democrats’ poll ratings have fallen by more than 50 percent since going into coalition with David Cameron’s Conservatives in 2010, it’s a chance to appeal to pro-EU voters neglected by other parties, two months before European Parliament elections.
