Con Edison Got Gas Leak Report Before Explosion in East Harlem

Consolidated Edison Inc. received a report of a suspected natural gas leak before the explosion and collapse of two buildings in New York City.

The utility sent a crew in response to a caller reporting the smell of gas at 9:13 a.m. from 1652 Park Avenue, Alfonso Quiroz, a company spokesman, said in a phone interview on NBC4 television today.

A blast was reported at about 9:30 a.m. at 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue. Firefighters are battling a five-alarm blaze in the area, with one person dead and others injured by the incident.
