Quarterback Johnny Manziel Signs Nike Marketing Deal, ESPN Says

Quarterback Johnny Manziel, projected to be one of the top picks in the National Football League draft in May, has signed a shoe and marketing contract with Nike Inc., ESPN reported.

Manziel, 21, who’s nicknamed “Johnny Football,” won the 2012 Heisman Trophy as the best player in college football and threw 63 touchdown passes while rushing for another 30 scores over two seasons at Texas A&M University.

Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins confirmed last night that Manziel had signed with the Beaverton, Oregon-based company that is the world’s largest sporting goods maker, ESPN said.

Adidas AG, Under Armour Inc. and New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc.’s Warrior brand also submitted bids for Manziel’s marketing rights, ESPN reported. Manziel wore Adidas uniforms while at Texas A&M.

Manziel announced in mid-January that he had hired LeBron James’s marketing manager, Maverick Carter of LRMR Management Company LLC, to help him with business, media, entertainment and merchandising opportunities. James plays for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association.
