Italian Soccer Player Diamanti Joins Chinese Team Evergrande

Italian national team soccer player Alessandro Diamanti joined Chinese Super League champion Guangzhou Evergrande, which is coached by Italian World Cup-winning team manager Marcello Lippi.

The 30-year-old former captain of Serie A team Bologna signed a three-year contract with a transfer fee of 6.9 million euros ($9.4 million), Guangzhou Evergrande said in a statement today without disclosing salary details. The Chinese team is owned by developer Evergrande Real Estate Group Ltd.

Diamanti’s arrival is a “critical piece in the puzzle” for Evergrande to defend the Chinese Super League and AFC Champions League titles, Lippi said, according to the statement.

Diamanti, who played for Italy in the European Championship and the Confederations Cup, has represented the national team 17 times.
