Pork Inventories in U.S. Declined 2.2% in November, USDA Says

Pork stockpiles in the U.S. fell 2.2 percent at the end of November from a year earlier, the government said.

Warehouses held 546.333 million pounds of pork, down from 558.688 million on Nov. 30, 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today in a report. Inventories declined 3.3 percent from the end of October.

U.S. pork production is projected to total 23.22 billion pounds (10.5 million metric tons) this year, down 0.1 percent from 2012, the latest government forecast shows. Pork output in November fell 1.8 percent from a year earlier, the USDA said in a report yesterday.

“Realistically, the market has been pretty strong,” Dan Vaught, an economist at Doane Advisory Services in St. Louis, said in a telephone interview before the report. “At the same time, we have been producing less pork and fewer hams this year than last year.”

As of Nov. 30, stockpiles of pork bellies, which are cured and sliced to make bacon, jumped 102.8 percent from a year earlier to 48.344 million pounds, according to today’s report. Warehouse supplies of ham climbed 18.8 percent to 116.002 million pounds.

Chicken-meat inventories at the end of November were 7.3 percent larger than a year earlier at 720.935 million pounds, the USDA said. Beef supplies rose 0.7 percent to 445.002 million pounds during the same period.
