Gulbis Defeats Garcia-Lopez in St. Petersburg Open Tennis FinalPeter-Joseph Hegarty
Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis recovered to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in the final of tennis’s St. Petersburg Open.
No. 6 seed Gulbis defeated the unseeded Spaniard 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 after winning the last 11 games. It was Gulbis’s fourth ATP title.
Second-seed Gilles Simon beat French countryman and No. 1 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Moselle Open in Metz, France. It was Simon’s first ATP title for 17 months.
Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland fought back to defeat Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets to win the Korea Open.
Radwanska beat the No. 3 seed 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-4 in Seoul for her third title of the year and the first since January.
“It was a very close match, tight sets all of them, but I was just a little bit better in the important moments,” world No. 4 Radwanska said on the WTA website.
Chinese wildcard Zhang Shuai beat Vania King of the U.S. 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 in the final of the Guangzhou International to win her first WTA title.
