Netanyahu Leaves Hospital After Hernia Surgery, Office Says

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was released from Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center today after successfully undergoing an unscheduled hernia operation overnight, his office said.

“I want to thank the professional and devoted medical team that treated me,” Netanyahu said after the surgery in a text message to journalists.

The weekly cabinet session scheduled for today was postponed until further notice. A special ministerial panel meeting to decide which Palestinian prisoners will be released first as part of renewed peace negotiations will proceed under Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, Netanyahu’s office said.

Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are scheduled to meet on Aug. 14 to continue peace talks that resumed in Washington last month after a three-year hiatus. Israel agreed to free 104 prisoners to get the negotiations moving again, and the Palestinians have said the first group of 26 is to be released on Aug. 13.
