The chief executive of General Motors, Dan Akerson, delivered the commencement address to MBA graduates of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business on Saturday. Akerson told graduates that “there are the career-defining tests of character, where you must be prepared to lead by example. Luckily, these kinds of tough calls don’t occur every day. However, a single misstep can undo a decade or more of hard work.”

Most of the speech focused on leadership, with parts of his message echoing what he said to MBA graduates at the Columbia Business School commencement last year. He told that class “to lead effectively you must serve your family, your community, your country,” while this year’s graduates were told, “I urge you to put your country’s interests above your own. Get involved in your community. Serve your fellow citizen.”
