Israel’s Peres Urges EU to List Hezbollah as a Terrorist GroupJonathan Stearns
Israeli President Shimon Peres urged the European Union to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, saying the group is “destroying Lebanon” with Iran’s support.
In a speech to the European Parliament, Peres said Lebanon-based Hezbollah isn’t a political movement because “they collect missiles. They are trigger-happy.” The group is “a state within a state; they are a private army apart from the national army,” he said.
“We appeal to you -- call terror terror,” Peres told the 27-nation EU assembly today in Strasbourg, France. “Save Lebanon from terrorist madness.”
Last week, Jose Barroso, president of the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said the bloc may consider designating Hezbollah as a terrorist organization after Bulgaria completes an inquiry into a 2012 bombing in which Hezbollah has been implicated.
