EDF Commissions Canada Wind Farms Worth $700 Million

EDF Energies Nouvelles SA started operations at two wind farms in Canada representing a $700 million investment as the French utility’s clean energy unit seeks to reach more than one gigawatt of wind in Quebec by 2015.

EDF EN Canada Inc. commissioned the Massif du Sud venture and the first phase of the Lac Alfred facility, according to an e-mailed statement. Each project has a 150-megawatt capacity using 75 turbines made by REpower Systems SE of Germany.

EDF, which won rights to develop seven wind projects in tenders run by Hydro-Quebec in 2008 and 2010, plans to install 1 gigawatt of wind in Quebec by the end of 2015, according to the statement.
