Wisconsin by the NumbersBy
RACE TO WATCH: The race to succeed retiring U.S. Senator Herb Kohl (D) will put into sharp focus political and ideological divisions that tear at Wisconsin. Former GOP Representative Mark Neumann, a favorite of the party’s resurgent conservative wing, is expected to be challenged in the primary by former governor (1987-2001) and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, who once drew support from independents and Democrats. The announced Democratic candidate is seven-term U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin, who carries strong liberal credentials and is openly gay.
