Kan Calls for Debate Over Private Nuclear Plants in Japan

Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the country must consider whether private companies should administer nuclear power stations in light of the disaster at a crippled reactor in Fukushima prefecture.

“Given the scale of the risk of a nuclear accident, I agree that debates are needed on whether private companies can take on the burden,” Kan said in parliament today. “In some other countries, it’s not necessarily the case” that private firms are involved, he said.
