Chile Offers $4 Billion Education Fund Following Protests

Chile’s government plans to create a $4 billion education fund, partly financed by copper revenue, as President Sebastian Pinera reacts to weeks of student protests.

Pinera plans to increase scholarships and grants and reduce the cost of student loans as part of a series of measures unveiled in a televised address last night. Students will stage protests July 14 to push for additional reform, Radio Cooperativa quoted Camila Vallejo, president of the University of Chile student federation, as saying after the speech.
