Pujols, Cardinals Approach Deadline to Agree on New Contract

Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals said they’ll suspend contract negotiations for the rest of the season if they don’t reach an agreement on a new deal by a club-imposed deadline of noon New York time tomorrow.

A three-time winner of the National League’s Most Valuable Player award, Pujols is entering the final season of an eight-year, $111 million contract. He’s likely seeking a new multiyear contract from the Cardinals that would make him among the highest-paid players in Major League Baseball history.
