U.S. Coal Consumption Fell 3.3% in Past Week, Genscape Says

U.S. coal consumption dropped 3.3 percent in the week ended yesterday from the previous seven-day period, driven by a drop in the East, according to an analysis by Genscape Inc.

Eastern power-plant use slumped 3.6 percent while consumption in the West increased 0.4 from the previous week, the data provider said. Overall, coal demand was down 4.9 percent from a year earlier.
